Ripstop 1×1 vs 2×2: How to Specify the Grid

Compare small ripstop grid directions and learn why grid size, reinforcement yarn and base construction should be specified separately.

Quick answer

Ripstop uses a reinforcement pattern within the base construction. Terms such as 1×1 mm or 2×2 mm describe approximate grid scale, not complete performance.

What changes when the grid changes

Grid scale changes visual repeat and reinforcement spacing, while the result also depends on base yarn, reinforcement yarn, density and finish.

Specify the reinforcement separately

Two fabrics with the same grid dimensions may use different yarn combinations. Record base yarn, reinforcement direction, grid, GSM and finish.

Use tests for performance decisions

The word ripstop should not substitute for a tear or durability requirement. Provide the customer method and target when one applies.

Buyer specification checklist

What to include in the development brief

  • State the approximate grid repeat in millimetres rather than using only a supplier label such as 1×1 or 2×2.
  • Record the base yarn and reinforcement yarn separately when they differ.
  • Clarify whether reinforcement appears in both directions and how the grid is arranged.
  • Include construction density, finished GSM and usable width.
  • Describe the required visual prominence of the grid together with colour and finishing.
  • If tear strength matters, provide the customer test method, direction and target rather than assuming the word ripstop is sufficient.

Development note

How to keep the approval record clear

For a sample match, measure the grid on the physical swatch and keep a scale reference photo with the development record. Supplier shorthand can describe approximate repeats differently. Grid size is therefore best treated as a visible construction detail, while tear or durability approval remains a separate measured requirement.

Buyer questions

Is a 2×2 grid stronger than a 1×1 grid?

Not necessarily. Grid spacing is only one variable.

Does ripstop always have a visible square pattern?

Visibility varies with yarn, colour, weave and finishing.
