10D vs 15D vs 20D Fabric: What Changes?

Compare 10D, 15D and 20D yarn directions without assuming denier alone determines fabric weight, strength, transparency or downproof performance.

Quick answer

10D, 15D and 20D usually describe nominal yarn denier. They are useful development shorthand, but they are not complete fabric specifications.

Denier is not GSM

Denier is yarn linear density; GSM is fabric mass per area. Finished weight also depends on density, filament configuration, construction and finishing.

Appearance and transparency depend on construction

Colour, weave cover, yarn cross-section, filament count, finish and ripstop grid can all change visual transparency.

Strength cannot be ranked from denier alone

Yarn quality, weave, reinforcement and finish affect the result. Choose around garment use, test requirement and acceptable handle rather than denier alone.

Buyer specification checklist

What to include in the development brief

  • Clarify whether the denier applies to warp, weft or both directions.
  • Record filament count when it is relevant to the reference yarn and handfeel.
  • Specify weave, density and any ripstop grid instead of using 10D, 15D or 20D as the whole construction.
  • Compare finished GSM, usable width, opacity or transparency and surface feel on the actual sample.
  • Identify calendering, cire, DWR, coating or other finishing that changes the finished fabric.
  • Attach the garment end use and any tear, containment, repellency or care method that must be verified.

Development note

How to keep the approval record clear

When comparing lightweight swatches, weigh and inspect the finished fabrics rather than ranking them from denier alone. Density and finishing can make nominal 10D, 15D and 20D constructions overlap in finished weight or visual cover. For development, the useful comparison is the complete construction plus the buyer-approved handfeel and test requirements.

Buyer questions

Is 10D always lighter than 15D or 20D fabric?

Not automatically; finished GSM depends on the complete construction.

Which denier is best for a down jacket?

There is no universal best denier. Balance weight, handle, appearance, durability and containment.
